Buhari considering emergency security force  – Nigeria Latest News Headlines

Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau has disclosed the federal government intention to establish a national guard to combat security emergencies in Nigeria.
He disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja‎ when the Adjutant General of the California National Guard, U.S paid him a courtesy visit.
‎The minister, however. stressed that a lot of consultations would be done before any
decision is taken in that regard.
Dambazzau recalled that several years ago the government had planned the establishment of a National Guard, but the idea did not materialise because of a number of challenges.
He explained that the National Guard would help to fill the gap between the operations of the Military and the Nigerian Police in tackling security challenges and emergencies.
According to him, the military was becoming increasingly involved in dealing with some security threats in the country which is outside their constitutional mandate while the police might be overstretched in dealing with‎ such issues.
He said Nigeria‎ would continue to collaborate with the international community, including sharing experiences with the U.S Army in the training of Nigeria’s security personnel, adding that the visit of U.S military officials would help strengthen the cordial relationship between both countries, especially as regards security.
Earlier, the adjutant general, David Baldwin, a Maj.-Gen., said he and his team were in Nigeria to foster partnership between both countries.
He said that California as one of the biggest states in the U.S had its own National Guard like other states which is responsible security and emergencies.‎
He said the California National Guard will be involved in the training of Nigeria’s security agencies under the Ministry of Interior such as the Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service, NSCDC and Prisons to deal with security challenges/emergencies.
Mr. Baldwin said the training was designed for two to three years to equip the security personnel with modern trend in security and emergency operations.
On the establishment of a National Guard in Nigeria, he said that it was up to the Nigerian government to decide the modalities for the establishment of any security outfit.
He said the outfit is a very strategic and cost effective outfit that has helped the U.S in tackling security challenges and emergencies such as flood, fire and other natural disasters.

Gunmen attack on EFCC is shocking, disturbing – Sagay – Nigeria Latest News Headlines

Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), has condemned the attack at the Headquarters of the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abuja, by unknown gunmen last Wednesday.

Unknown gunmen while fleeing after the attack, left a death threat note behind.

Sagay described the attack as a shocking and disturbing development. He said: “Good God, is that so? It is a frightening development. How could gunman have courage to go to the EFCC office to shoot at them? It just shows you how desperate the looters and corrupt people are getting the courage to attack a major institution like the EFCC. “It is shocking and it shows you the enormity of the battle to tame corruption and reduce it in this country. It shows why we need people who are strong and committed to fight the battle because the faint-hearted cannot do it in this country.”

The attack, which, according to the commission, took place in the early hours of Wednesday, was, however, repelled by security operatives watching the Commission, causing serious pandemonium around Zone 7 of the FCT, where the office is located.

A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the heavily armed gunmen managed to escape in a getaway vehicle after destroying many vehicles parked in the premises.

National Daily learned that the assailants wanted to invade the particular section of the office, which houses the Assets Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, Desk and the Procurement Fraud and Foreign Exchange Malpractices Sections. It was also gathered that the attackers had targeted a senior investigator with the agency, Ishaku Sharu, whom they left a death threat in a white envelope for, before fleeing. The said Ishaku heads the Foreign Exchange Malpractices Fraud Section in EFCC and is reported to be in charge of corruption investigation involving several politically exposed persons and retired top military officers.

The assault on Ishaku is coming barely a few weeks after another investigator, Austin Okwor, was shot and wounded by unknown assailants in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Uwujaren said Wednesday that the latest attack had already been reported to the police for investigation.

Group debunks N3.8b fraud allegation against Kachikwu – Nigeria Latest News Headlines

The Conscience of the Niger (TCN), a new socio-political movement on the horizon, has reacted to a report by 10exclusive, an online news portal, accusing the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, of N3.8 billion fraud, saying the allegations were not only unfounded but the handiwork of power hawks and mischief makers, who were determined to discredit and blemish the oil minister for obvious reasons.

10exclusive had reported recently that President Muhammadu Buhari on his sick bed has been having sleepless nights over Kachikwu’s management of the ministry and that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s recent visit to London was not unconnected to issues in the petroleum ministry, especially, allegations of corruption against the minister. The report also claimed that Kachikwu had been using his younger brother, Dumebi Kachikwu, as front in many deals, adding that the one that created the current crisis was a N3.8 billion allegedly collected by Dumebi in exchange for a marginal oil field in the Niger Delta waters. Against this backdrop, the news portal reported that the president had concluded plans to sack Kachikwu.

But in responding, leader of TCN, Mitai Okeroghene, said the attempt to discredit Kachikwu was an advanced and well-intended plot by some persons within the corridors of power, who had become uncomfortable with some of the feats he has recorded in the ministry despite the challenges that paved his way and were poised to making his job impossible.

Specifically reacting to some of these allegations, Okeroghene said “First, there were no marginal fields granted by Kachikwu or anyone since the Muhammadu Buhari administration came on board and as such, the allegations remain the figment of the imagination of those behind the attacks against Kachikwu.” Continuing, he contended that the power to grant marginal field resided with the minister of petroleum, in which case, the president and not the minister of state, adding that the attacks, as far as he was concerned, was a subtle attempt to discredit the president and not even Kachikwu.

“But unfortunately for them, a man of Dr. Kachikwu’s standing, who did so much to institute transparency in the oil sector and with enviable international pedigree could not succumb to such corruption rascality. So, those trying aimlessly to blemish the person and credibility of the minister need a review of strategy. “One would have expected that people, who believe in the veracity of their accusations, would rather show their faces by taking a direct report to the appropriate agencies with sufficient facts to carry out its investigation. Indeed, the whistleblowing policy of the federal government creates an incentive for this, so, why resort to blogs to blackmail the minister. “We are not unaware that all these attacks are not unconnected to the purported cabinet reshuffle and until the planned reshuffling is over, these faceless jobbers, whose whole lives revolve around corruption and blackmail, will continue to target Dr. Kachikwu for being too drastic in his resolve to salvage the oil industry,” he said. He, therefore, maintained that the “attacks on Dr. Kachikwu are the orchestrations by some powerful persons in the system and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), who are determined to see that Kachikwu is shown the way out, because they are uncomfortable with his cutting-edge reforms in the ministry.”
